Information on drivers licenses, IDs and permits with the MO Department of Revenue.

Call (573) 526-2407

Driver's licensing, driving exams, and motor vehicle licensing and titling are services provided by the state of Missouri, not the City of St. Louis. See the guidelines below for how to obtain, renew or replace a driver's license or ID.

Gather Documents

You will need to bring documentation with you to obtain, renew or replace a license or ID. These documents may include a birth certificate, social security card, passport, utility bill or other documents. Review the Drivers Licensing Checklist to see what documents you will need.

In some cases you will need to take a driving exam. Review information about Driver Examinations to see if you need to take an exam.

Find an Office Near You

The MO Department of Revenue has a list and map of all office locations where you can obtain or renew your license.

The locations within the city limits are listed below. All three of these locations are walk-in only (no appointments), but the downtown office uses a virtual lobby so you can wait outside until you are notified via text that it is your turn. Please call to confirm hours of operation.

What to Expect

At the time of processing, you will receive a temporary, paper document and may keep the old license card, which will be punched “VOID.” The permanent license will be produced at a single, secure facility, and arrive in the mail at the address provided within 7 to 10 business days.

The license card is mailed in a regular envelope through the U.S. Postal Service, similar to the way a credit card or passport is mailed. The envelope will have a return mail address for the Department of Revenue.

Note: Some applications, such as a new Commercial Driver License, will require a secondary review for final approval and may exceed the average 7-10 day time frame.

Please see the MO Department of Revenue Drivers License FAQ for details.
