Fleet Maintenance Technician (Trainees) shall receive the bi-weekly Trainee rate of $1,470.00 upon appointment and serve in an eleven (11) month working test (probationary) period.  Upon successful completion of their working test period and being granted permanent status as a Fleet Maintenance Technician III, the employee shall receive advancement to the general recruitment rate with an annual salary of $49,972.

Nature of Work

Incumbents in this position are trained by lead worker fleet maintenance personnel to repair, overhaul and maintain automotive and heavy equipment and vehicles.

Minimum Qualifications

Current enrollment in a recognized apprenticeship program, trade school, or junior college program to repair and maintain automobiles, heavy trucks, and/or construction equipment.  Applicants must have completed the first year of a recognized two year technical training program and be currently enrolled and pursuing an Associate's degree or equivalent credential in the appropriate curriculum.  Proof of completion of program will be required upon successful completion of the working test period.  Trainees must furnish their own set of hand tools.

Documentation of academic credentials must be submitted at the time of the Oral Interview.

License: Must possess and maintain a valid Missouri driver’s license while employed by the City of St. Louis.  Must be able to present license at time of the Oral Interview.  Candidates must obtain a valid CDL (Class A or B) as a condition of successfully completing their working test period and maintain license while employed by the City of St. Louis.  Please note type of license, number, class and expiration date on the Employment Application.  Applicants who do not possess a Missouri driver’s license will be required to present a “Driving Record Check” from their State’s Department of Motor Vehicles.

Please be as thorough as possible when describing your qualifying automotive repair experience, training and educational achievements on the Employment Application.  Include reasons for changes in employers and gaps in employment.  Incomplete and/or carelessly completed applications will not be considered.  Resumes will not be accepted as a substitute to a fully completed application. 

MEDICAL:  The pre-employment medical exam will include a drug/alcohol screen and subsequent random drug/alcohol testing in accordance with D.O.T. regulations

VETERAN'S PREFERENCE POINTS:  To be eligible for veteran's preference points, the applicant must submit a copy of his/her DD 214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty with the Employment Application or at the time of the Oral Interview.  The Director of Personnel may, in his discretion, accept alternate documentation.
